What is Classical Education?

Classical education is human formation. The typically educated American student goes to school in hopes of a career and money. A classically educated student pursues wisdom, truth, beauty, and virtue. Progressive education forms students to be part of an economic model. Classical education forms students into virtuous adults capable of living satisfying and productive lives.

How can Classical Education address declining student performance?

The steep decline in student performance in America is directly linked to progressive philosophies which have captured teaching colleges, publishing houses, and public education. Progressive educational philosophies turn their back on traditional human wisdom, passed down for generations. Classical education is the antithesis. Embracing the notion that past generations have great wisdom to share, classical educators take what is known about human development and flourishing and apply these ideas to their students. These assumptions result in students who learn important skills when young, so they can wrestle with the great books when they’re older. Progressive philosophies have required standards to be lowered across the educational landscape, including college and some graduate-level programs. Conversely, classically educated students are encouraged to reach ever higher, never stopping in their quest for truth, beauty, and goodness.

Shouldn’t I go to college to learn how to be a teacher?

It all depends on your purpose. If you want to teach in a public school, then you need to go to an accredited teacher college, embrace the system of progressive teaching philosophy, pass required state exams, and use the correct talking points when interviewing for a job. If you’re interested in teaching at a classical school, or homeschooling your own children, there is a better path. Classical teachers require a deep understanding of human nature and the process of development, as well as mastery of their content area. Some excellent college programs impart these two elements to their graduates; such programs are few and far between. Determine your reason for studying, and choose accordingly

The Case for Classical Education

What’s currently being taught in most schools?

Most public and many private schools focus on job preparation as the end goal for student success. Such an emphasis short-changes students, depriving them of their intellectual inheritance and human potential. Classical education prepares students to be fully alive humans, while progressive education prepares students for outdated jobs and a lifetime of following the herd. We are made for more.

What do classical teachers need to know?

Classical teachers need to know the tradition. They need to situate literature within historical context, be able to translate foreign phrases, notice and explain philosophical ideas when encountered, be conversant in mathematical and scientific approaches, while being experts in human nature.  Such a teacher should have the broadest sympathies and the most specific knowledge in areas of interest. While recognizing the prior description as a necessary goal, every classical educator acknowledges the impossibility of fully reaching it; teaching is a calling that allows one to continue growing in knowledge over a lifetime.

What would a Logres certificate do for me?

A Logres Certificate signifies that the graduate has gone through a specific curriculum of classical content, indicating the ability to lead others through similar course materials. It affirms having read the works assigned and learned from a Socratic instructor asking the right questions. Our certificates signal a desire to deeply understand classical content and show the markings of a lifelong learner. A Logres Certificate is also your connection to a network of intellectually engaged teachers seeking to grow the classical education movement and build community through encountering and discussing great ideas.
